Formula Student is an annual UK competition where teams made up from Universities from across the world build cars to compete against each other. The cars are judged in a series of static and dynamic events including: technical inspection, cost, presentation, engineering design, solo performance trials, and high performance track endurance.
“I competed at Formula Student in 2003, 2005 and 2006 with Oxford Brookes University.”
Consultant Design Engineer, Ensevo: Anthony Smith
This project is highly relevant to the automotive industry as it represents a typical project that all automotive companies undertake at some point. Although the project is primarily based on automotive design, it solves a range of different mechanical engineering design problems, so skills are easily transferable.
“I was a design judge at the Formula Student competition, representing McLaren Racing, in 2013.”
Consultant Design Engineer, Ensevo: Anthony Smith
When designing a component or sub-assembly of components, it is important to fully understand the context in which it is set if maximum potential is to be achieved.
The overall objectives of a Formula Student car are:
- Comply with regulations
- High performance
- Low cost
- Reliable
- Easy to maintain and service
